However what is everyone's opinion on having a separate forum just for FarRiders ? I would tend to keep the private part here for contact details but over time who knows. I have had one sitting to the side for a while now, register if you like just in case. However I am after imput from members. It's obvious that FarRiders is going to grow. Maybe this is something we should do now before that happens. One I prepared earlier http://farriders.com/forum/index.php note there are no sections as yet only the one general forum. I don't think it's a matter of 'if', but 'when'. The group has a good following, and I am discovering more and more people in my circle of riding friends and associates who know about FarRiders but have not yet joined in. More than a few plan to. The sooner it gets its own site the better in my humble opinion. However, I think that will make it sky-rocket as it will be seen as a stand-alone group and not as a sub-set of GTR-AUS or something else. Are you prepared for that? I have a couple of mates already planning on joining in for Nambucca and again at Cooroy. 138 members now. If each brings only one mate along - That's a doubling in size overnight, albiet spread between East and West which will allow some growth stagger. You already have two 'Chapters' (and I'll use that term loosely) because of the East/West divide. You almost have to plan for an East/North and East/South split to cater for growth in the QLD and Northern NSW areas versus the Southern NSW, VIC and SA evirons. Again - That's something that needs to be factored into your plans. As a new boy, I'd love to see the group stand-alone, but the growing pains are likely to hurt for a while and consume a lot of your time. My view is that if FarRiders is (or is to become) the true home of long-distance motorcycle touring in Australia, then it must have it's own identity and either survive and thrive or end up as a good try that didn't work. The old R1150R Board I belonged to had (voluntary) membership fees (not to be confused with fees paid to join a club). Nothing outrageous, but it provided a very small compensation for the owner/convener of the Board. Call it a voluntary upkeep fee if you like. I must say that I liked the stand alone example you listed up there Davo, and without a doubt, there will be big growth over the next few years. How much growth is almost up to "how much do you want?". There are plenty more people out there who do it already, but have no idea that there is a community of people interested too. It really is about exposure.....and bring on the voluntary fees, with perhaps a premium membership attached. You know other forums that I frequent have the same deal, and it works there. Some people expect your blood for nothing, but others are different. IBA #33742

However, with fees comes accountability, banking, treasurers, committees, incorporated bodies, AGMs, ASIC returns, INSURANCE........ At the home page of this forum, it is pointed out that this is a forum only and not a registered club. I believe that the Farriders is also a friendly get together of like minded people, with the only criteria being that a Farride has been completed to get your name on a list. The separate forum would also operate simpler in that format. If the Farriders was to become a club, then the weight of administration would come to bear. I am sure that if anyone was feeling generous, then a gift to Davo would enable him to maintain the site fees without dipping into his pocket as much as he does. I know he does this because he loves it BUT he does have a US trip coming up and even bosses at Real Estate firms do have budgets. As per our conversation the other day regarding same. I'd like to see FarRiders stand alone also. But more importantly, I'd like to see you personally at an arms length to potential litigation. And if this means the we become a club to have that insurance and we have to make financial contributions/memberships accordingly, than so be it. It's your Baby. Ultimately it's your call. I do however recognise the potential for growth and will support Davo's decision whichever way he chooses. I enjoy both aspects of this board, and have already made many friends who do and don't ride GTRs and I for one would hate to lose the input and wisdom of the FarRiders who do not own the vastly superior GTRs. (1986 GTR1000, 17,000km around Australia in 6 days 17 hours). With regard to your comments Peter, about being a free forum, well yes it is to a certain extent. But someone has to foot the bills to keep those darn adverts out and someone has to administer the forum. At the mnoment that has all fallen to Davo. The other Boards I've been part of operated on a 'donation' basis so that all prospect of 'club' liability could be avoided. If you like, it was a donation to help with the upkeep and moderation of the site, as suggested by Reader57. Becoming a club, official or casual, brings with it a multitude of very unfortunate litigation possibilities. Ulysses go to great pains to tell people on their rides that they are riding for themselves, and not as amember of a motorcycle club. It's a social club for motorcyclists as they say. The mere fact that a seperate forum (Board site or whatever) was going to be used to represent the intersts of FarRiders is not the formation of a club, gang, group or anything else. It is simply a common, easily identified and accessible 'place' for members to exchange ideas and discuss trips. You may become a 'FarRider' by meeting certain qualifying requirements (status quo), but you are only a member of the FarRider Board because you register a user name and have a password. Whether you choose to donate towards the site upkeep is your choice, not an obligation. I don't think that having having a seperate Board under the FarRider's banner is akin to becoming a motorcycle club, and I would hate to see the group registered as a club because that would indeed bring a huge load of administrative costs and time burdens, as well as requiring some hefty insurance. I don't think that is what is proposed. This is a difficult area to get into, and I've seen good sites fall apart because it all got too hard and the interest died or waned, or the group split and went in two different directions. Davo - I'd love to see a dedicated site for FarRiders. I don't want to see a 'club' formed at this early stage of growth. I'm happy to donate to support the upkeep of the site (Which means you would collect a voluntary nominal fee from 'Board Members who would most likely also be qualified FarRiders). I doubt that the subsequent call for FarRiders to attend a meet at Nambucca would be exposing Davo to personal liability. It's just the nomination of a place and time. There is ample latitude to allow people any number of methods to meet 'qualifying' requirements, and it's a personal choice, not a dictated mandatory standard. This might be an interesting thread to follow. Cheers all.

FarRide in - straight ride in 1000klm min 2. IBA ride in - straight ride in IBA level and docs 3. Either of above plus Rally - Bonus gathering as per LD Rallies in the US. or 4th, pussy ride and hide in the corner :) This will be either 1/2/3 for me but that #4 still intrigues me. Do you get to hide with the pussy? Anyway, I strongly suspect that the FarRiders will continue to grow and do what they do best, no matter what form of organisation it is. Posts: 54 ( 6-Nov-08 6:30 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Davo et al, Having been involved in a number of amateur sporting clubs, including but not limited to multi-discipline motorbike clubs, and having to endure the (collective) pain of incorporation, insurance, meetings, compliance etc. etc., I for one would strongly discourage forming a club - to the extent of personally severing involvement if it came to pass. I think the original suggestion was to have the FarRiders as a seperate forum, not a a sub-set of GTR-Aus as it is at present - and I support this move. Voluntary contributions? By all means. Mandatory fees? NBW* - it's then a club. Having said that, it does work as is, and it's good to have a peek at the goings-on in GTR-Aus - and sticking one's oar in occasionally, I daresay to the annoyance of some! But FarRiders doesn't have a discreet, seperate identity. I came across this by accident, and love it for what it is. A disparate bunch of guys and gals who love having their head stuck in a helmet all day and half the night given the opportunity. I think it deserves it's own identity rather than being a subset of something else. I guess the early FarRiders would say that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is merit in that. But growth will come faster (not necessarily better - just faster) if FarRiders stands as its own entity. It is Davo's call because it's his baby. I'm more than happy to support whatever happens, but like you, I have serious reservations of becoming too much of a club rather than a conglomeration of individuals as it is now. Most of us are 'FarRiders' (and it is nice to able to use that description) because we love solitary (or very small group) riding. Damned hard to form a 'club' when most of us have that mindset. I think we would all agree it's ok to build a new house - We just have to give Davo some ideas on what to build it out of, how fancy it should be, and where to put the doors and windows. He'll make the final call. I look forward to the outcome, whatever it is.

You already have a winner Davo. It can only get bigger and better from here, no matter what you do or don't do. The more FarRiders you have, the more opinions you will get, the more headaches WE will generate for you with ideas and suggestions that may not suit you or your purpose for building this great group. I am just very pleased that I'm a part of it, no matter what direction it takes. FarRiders has given me some new goals to aim for with distance riding, and that suits me fine. I can't thank you enough for allowing my late registration for Tottenham when you did. Haven't been off the bike since! Cheers. I'll sit back and see what else happens here now.

Farriders will grow absolutely, and I think a seperate forum is the way to go. Farriders appears to me to be a bunch of like minded people who like to do the same sort of stuff. The forum simply gives them somewhere to congregate when they're not on the road. It's a dreaming place for getting another ride happening.... If you farride you are part of an exclusive "club" anyway. No committees needed. Soaks up far too much time and effort and for what?? Proper clubs create politics....I dislike politics although a couple of mates might disagree on that.. Forum costs and donations. Maybe Davo could give us an idea how much he "donates" to have the forum and we could put a bowl in the entrance way and flick a gold coin donation in every month or something. All donations then.. While I was in Canberra over the weekend (practising for a farride and that's the excuse I gave to the wife) I went to the War Memorial and basically they asked you to flick a gold coin into the bowl. If you read awhile ago an article in ARR mag about being a "ride leader" you would understand why this opens yourself up for this. Davo does set a day, date, location and a pretty tight time frame for arrival (within 30mins). It's not fair that his arse is then on the line. Will everyone here then put up their hand to help cover his legal costs? I bet you won't. See how far a gold coin will get you. Can you afford to take that chance? All he needs is some upset spouse or dependant to have a go at him claiming their partner/father/mother under normal circumstances wouldn't have done these rides. If they aren't successfull, it's still bad press and as always the mud still sticks. Don't forget it's Davo's name out, not your's and mine. Plaintiff lawyers WILL turn nothing into something. Let's face it Phil, we have have manufactures these days who makes vehicles with alleged design flaws, that then say, not covered by warranty...not our problem. We know it's a problem so we'll fix it on the next one, but you with the old one, your on your own. "all care..no responsibiltiy taken" Under normal circumstances, in the OLD DAYS, we would have assumed they would do the right thing by the customer it the interest of future sales and customer relations. Litigation also requires proof of negligence, and it would be interesting to have a look at the IBA organisation's insurance coverage for the rides they sponser in a litigeous place like the USA. We already know that signing 'waivers' and other 'disclaimers' is a worthless exercise. You can still sue an organiser of an event, provided you can prove negligence (or some other wrong-doing), regardless of any 'waiver' you may have been required to sign before or during the event. If we collectively take the approach that the next ride Davo organises comes at his peril because I (and everyone else) might ride too long and fall asleep and die, then FarRiders is doomed now. I know that's not what you mean, but that's why Ulysses have such strict rules about rides not being 'club rides', just social gatherings. I recall reading the same article in ARR (and a few others in recent times), and I still don't think personal liability is an issue for Davo. But - I do agree that it would only take one guy to test the waters next time they hit a roo or fall asleep to make life very difficult for the organisers of any event like the ones we have. It's a sad fact of life as you correctly pointed out. Maybe this is getting way off track. The question relates to having FarRiders having its own identity. The issue of ride organisation and litigation is a vastly different thing. Very relevant, but different. Maybe it's time to get Davo back in to discuss how a potential litigant would be handled. What would happen if Mrs Smith claimed that her husband died because he was 'required' to meet a deadline that meant riding umpteen hours at maximum 'legal' speeds? I think the answer would be that he was not 'required' to do anything. Therefore no negligence - Therfore no case to answer. But you are right that the bad press might be an issue. It's a sad world we live in, and a damned messy subject that is only ever really answered when it gets in front of a judge.
