I'm planning a trip on a road bike in the next 3 weeks and want to stay off the dirt.
Some maps I've seen show it sealed all the way and some show a small unsealed section near Taralga.
Thanks

Can anyone please tell me if the road between Oberon and Taralga NSW is sealed all the way.

Well I can tell you that I put that info Mapsource the mapping software I use for my GPS and told it NO DIRT roads and I slid the slider to the right fully for
"Prefer Highways"
It gave me an almost direct route south (lots of twists) and 102 klms So my best guess having not ridden that road that I can recall is that its sealed. |

Thanks guys, all info appreciated. I've taken a weeks leave to attend Farride #8 and decided to make a bit of a trip of it and head towards the NSW south
coast from Brissie using the usual motorcycling roads. After the Putty I plan on heading down to the Jenolan Caves and this stretch from Oberon will save me
from back tracking. I really would like to avoid major highways and see where I will end up and then start my 1000 km run from wherever I am friday morning to
Tottenham.

Large the road out of Jenolan caves is also sealed all the way now as well so you can come in from the east and out the west I live half way between Oberon and
Jenolan on the west side so may be we can catch up I am also going to farcain rally but at a bit diffrent pace not into clocks and times and all that.

It most certainly is tarred all the way and a very nice section of motorcycle road it is
lots of open high speed corners with lots of new tar. On a GTR14 (or FJR13
) it would be sheer bliss, just watch out for wild life after dark.
Just need to be careful on the drop down to the Abercrombie River crossing, very steep and narrow and a bit hairy if you strike "Bill & Betty on UHF99" in their overly large caravan coming the other way. Easy to tell the section because there is a sudden drop and the road surface changes. Also the road north from Bathurst that goes through Soffala is sheer bliss also

varadero wrote: Is that sealed? On my Adelaide to Brisbane trip last year, I looked at that road and got a couple of k's down it and there was a sign saying 75 kms of it was dirt. Sign was just out of Bathurst.

I did the road through Sofala from Bathurst in December 06 - it was all sealed and is a great bit of road! I encountered a fair number of stray sheep though! I
think there is a tourist drive that turns off it - that might be the 75km of unsealed road??? My memory is a bit hazy on that though - it was quite a while
ago!
The road from Oberon to Taralga is nice - I think - I've only done it once and it was very cold and damp and foggy. I think the roads out that way can be subject to snow/ice so that's something to watch for. There was a lot of excitement around Canberra when that road was finally sealed all the way earlier this year :) A group of us are heading up that way next weekend so hopefully the ice will stay away for us :) The river crossing was a little hairy - after the nice open sweepers then suddenly its this narrow twisting road and the centreline is gone and utes are suddenly appearing on the wrong side of the road in front of me :O |

large wrote: Sure is all tar Road goes through Sofala to Ilford on the Lithgow to Mudgee road. Section north of Sofala is the best section, especially just out of Sofala as you climb up out of the valley. When you hit Ilford, the road through to Rylstone isn't too bad either - don't go any further towards Mudgee after Rylstone - the section of road is
one of the worse roads in Oz. From memory there were quite a few Cinno shops in Rylstone

75k's unsealed would be the Hill End road the other one though Sofala is sealed all the way to the mudgee road [Ilford] |

Thanks everyone for the info.
Oberon to Taralga it is then. I think the Sofala sign just out of Bathurst was relating to a tourist route come to think of it. Oh well, another excuse to go back that way one day..

This road is colloquially known as the Black Springs or Porters Retreat road - it was even fun when it was dirt!
