Re: Fuel cell / long range fuel tank | ||

Question Tom and Davo I have run Aux tanks with most of my outfits Especialy the two vn1500 I had they both had 16 ltr tanks and when running an outfit plus trailer would get 200-230 k's out of a tank, Hence add more range first vn 88 model I made a steel 11 ltr tank and mounted it between the bike and Sidecar worked well, up the range by 108 k's my 2nd vn we uped the capacity by another 11 ltr's with 22 up my sleeve 38 lt'rs range a tad over 500 k's was good for an outfit hauling a trailer and the biggest Classic trailer they make at that. Now here is my Question Both you chaps run your tanks above your std tanks does this make your bikes top heavy ?? I would think this would upset the handling of your solo's.

Don mine is above so it can gravity feed and do away with more more posible problem of a pump failure.
The only time I notice the weight is if the aux tank is full and I am on roads like the Oxley. I never notice it any other time and I have done over 30,000klms with it on last year. When fueling I turn the main GTR tank off (converted) and fill both tanks. The aux tank is always turned on so it drains first and when the bike starts to cough I turn the main tank on. That removes the rear weight first. I get approx 170klms from the aux tank of 12litres usually but have run it dry in 100 |

Don, a good and very valid question, if you have the tank too high yes, the bike will be top heavy. I can't answer for Davo's setup accuratly, but the weight is less then that of a pillion passenger, 1/2 the weight really, mine will come in under 30Kg.
My tank does look big and high, it is a big tank really at 25Lt, but there is approx. 16Lt of that fuel sitting where the pillion seat was. see accompanying photo of the inside of my tank without baffles: ![]() As you can see where the tank steps down is where most of the fuel is, and that was where the pillion seat was. the height of the floor there is about 1.5" above the height where the fuel line taps into the stock tank in the riding position, ie, heading down the road. So, to answer your question simply is that yeah you will notice the weight there when the tank is full, and as it drains into the main tank it will disappear. I built and tested a steel mockup of the tank at approx. 20Lt, strapped a cement bag onto it and rode it for 3 wks up to some very high speeds and it really was just like having a pillion passenger on the back. Hope this helps Cheers Thommo FarRider #3

Unlike good simple reliable carb bikes, there is no simple way of me doing what Davo has setup with been able to run the aux first and then run the stock tank. Fuel Injection is wonderfull and a curse.

Thanks for clearing that up Davo and Tom. I like your pr test with cement bag Tom good thought and yes most pillions are heaver than your set ups. Yes i had a few hicups with low volume electric pumps but found the Hyundai fuel pump the better of most inline pumps would take about ten minutes to fill my bike tank on the go when switched on. Looks the goods Tom, like the mud flap down the back, you can never be too careful when towing a caravan.
New swag ? Davo

Yeah, the mud flap reduces stone damage to the trailer when riding on dirt roads (don't ask how i know this). Nothing wrong with us caravan towers, the grey army is alive and well yer know
New old swag Davo, got it for a b'day pressy last year, threw it in the corner of the shed same day. it has snowy swag written on it and it's a heavy canvas and simply waay to hot for up here. I used it for the first time at Coonabarabran when i met up with Wayne. My other swag is on it's last legs, might only get another 2 yrs outa it As for the back rest, i'l duck tape somthing on there FarRider #3

Some basic 3d cad models of the tank. Thanks to Ramjet for working with me and teaching me the finer arts of 3d cad. Rendered images are his work.
