As the cooler weather approaches , and I get the FJR all FARKLED up ( a term ive recently added to my vocab) for some long rides and putts around this beautiful country, I can see that having a long range fuel tank or fuel cell is I see some ppl call it, something that would be very handy.
I also want it to be removable relatively quickly with as little fuss as possible ( not asking much am I?? hahahaha)
Now due to my budget limitations Im planning on making my own tank out of alloy, what Im looking for is any advice tips ideas good or bad, where the best places to get quick disconnect fittings etc, any technical points and wot not.
Once I have the design all sorted fabbing the tank is straight forward, baffles etc similar to oil tanks and stuff that ive drawn up for various service trucks weve built. its just the little things, routing fuel lines, fittings etc that I want a better understanding of.
For a bit of background on me, I work as a spray painter/ cad draftsperson in a smallish engineering/fab shop that manufactures drop side ute trays, truck trays and stockcrates and various commercial vehicle stuff for the coal mines etc etc.. Around 30 odd guys work there most of whom would go out of there way and fab a tank up for me without a seconds thought and the local Enzed operator Paul would supply me with all the fittings and hoses I need.
However, before I fire up one of my cad programs and order fitting etc I want to learn about fuel systems , concepts, ideas, other ppls experiences etc etc so that if something goes wrong or someone asks me about it I can go yep I no the theory as well as the practical behind it.
The following link is a tank that I think is very innovative, it looks good ( to me anyhow) and is very functional, true to the motorcycle law of everything must have at least 2 uses .!!!

There a bound to be other ideas out there, I have only just started looking and Im in no rush at all to put a tank on the bike. It will be several months before I even start mocking up a cardboard and masking tape proto.
My email is moss26693577@iprimus.com.au if anyone wants to email me on it.
Cheers
