Starcom engine noise |
Lead | |
|
I have just installed a starcom unit which I had on a V-strom and put it on the GTR 1400. Now I did not have any engine electrical noise on the strom but on
the GTR it is that bad I can't use it. Does anyone had the same problem and how did you fix it.

I know nothing of starcom but it helps with Autocom if you run your cables over the top of the fuel tank between the tank and panels keep it as far away from
the coils and stuff as posible even a couple more inchs will help.
O and get the unit as far away down the back of the bike as you can. |

Hi Rob, not sure about the Starcom but I have an Autocom fitted up the front of my 1400 with all wiring away from any electrical interference (well as much as
possible) Had some minor noise but purchased a filter from Blue Rim (Autocom distributor) and all is fine. Perhaps Starcom have a similar noise filter
available.
If it was easy everyone would be doing it!

The unit is next to the tool kit with the wires running under the left side of the fuel tank. Where are the coils?

Hello Rob
I ride a BM mate so I am not sure were the coils are on a 1400, every bike that I have ever owned has them just under the tank including the GTR 1000 so you most likely have the wires runing directley over them so it will be a big ask for a filter to remove that noise |

The coils are attached directly to each spark plug in the top of the valve cover.
My other motorbike is a car with a motorbike engine - 360cc Honda.

No Freddy not the dreaded stick coil I hope
, is the coil like a spark
plug cover on steriods or is a normal coil with the plug bit hanging of the bottom

Just been reading the workshop manual and they are stick coils.
I have fixed the problem with the help of a friend. All we had to do was turn the volume down on the starcom unit to stop it picking up the engine noise. Strange way to fix it but it worked. 1400GTR

Here's a bet, now you all are on top of your fuel pumps and their filters the next miss at around 50,000 k's will be the STICK COILS here's a tip
go to kentucky fried chicken and buy a 24 piece bucket and get as many alchol wipes [hand cleaners] as they will give then thow the chicken in the bin on the
way out and take the alchol wipes home and put them in a safe place and every time you have your STICK COILS out don't touch the bit that goes down the
hole with your hands but give them a good wipe with the alchol wipes and give the hole a bit of a clean as well, the spark will track on the salt resuidue from
your hands and will start to break down the insulation and lead to failure of the STICK COIL and even if their not stick coils you need to apply the same thing
to any down the hole plug lead on eletrionic ingition for the best reliability and long life its why kentuckey fried is so suck ses full.
You can also buy alchol wips at a chemist or electrial whole salers but most likely cost as much as a bucket of chicken we get a tin of them with every high voltage termination kit [33,000 volts is high voltage] so if you know any of the local supply authority blokes hit them up for some. |

I have been informed that the alchol wipes from the chicken shop has a bit of look after you hands type product in it so best go to the chemist shop
