Knowing Davo for a while now, and lurking around this board has taught me that if he wasn't happy with the directions of the debate, he would have stepped in to bring it back on track..... Liability is something that can't be avoided easily. Look into the IBR inspections of the aux fuel tanks - that has been commented on as being very
dangerous in a legal sense, and I can recall a couple of instances where bikes have leaked fuel and caught fire. I guess the point is, LD riders are a little
loopy anyway

There is risk in everything we do. I think Davo makes a good point for new members considering that there is a sticky for new members that says something like
read this on road wisdom and fatigue management...cant see it to quote it directly but it does imply that you're pushing the boundaries. By knowing that
you can make an informed decision. i.e. take responsibility for your own actions.
I hear what you're saying Rick and I realise you're only the messenger so this isn't directed at you but isn't it about time we stopped blaming other people. Couple of initial random thoughts/comments on this matter:
* Yes, I support the concept of a stand alone forum. A forum disassociated with the GTR (no offence intended). Your bikes are lovely, please don't get me wrong, but you don't need a "transcontinential" or fully dressed tourer to do FarRides. I do them on my FireBlade and, as you know Davo, am keen to do one on my dirt bike. Have a look at the official riders list to see the percentages of GTR's to other bikes. There's your answer. * There are lots of people who do this sort of stuff already but aren't on FarRiders. * Forums are a great way to network. * When visiting this forum I always start at the bottom and work up. Very rarely do I venture into the GTR section. * I would support it by way of donation. I don't like the idea of a club concept, though.

I'm all for a stand-alone site. Very grateful for GTR-AUS for their support, but FarRiders should not be seen to be a splinter group.
Happy to donate towards upkeep and keeping it away from club status. FarRiders should never be more than a description. As to the litigation, I fail to see how anyone suggesting "Let's meet for lunch" could be litigated against if a participant failed to get there or home again. These suggestions are made millions of times a day in all sorts of places by just about everyone on the planet. Not that it would stop some fool from instigating proceedings, but it could never succeed. If we all worried that some fool might instigate proceedings against us for trivial occurrences, we'd never leave the house. Thanks for the warning Rick - feel free to gloat if it happens. Something else to consider, Davo:
With growth comes new ideas. On a stand alone forum, I doubt if it'll be too long before someone suggests that the "1000k ride to eat Saturday" concept be expanded upon. It's your baby, Davo - are you prepared for, or willing to, listen to change? |

Just so everyone knows whats going on in my head (not a lot) I am leaning towards the stand alone forum.
I know in my heart that's the best thing to do but I really like how some of the non GTR owners have been posting to the GTR sections with good comments and help. I would hate that to stop. But growth is happening. Let no one worry about me keeping up with it all, lots of life left in this young fella. I will digest this all and post something either tonight or over the weekend. It may be a good idea to register on that FarRiders forum anyway. If we go that direction I will set it up properly with forum sections. Not getting mushy, but love you guys. Thanks |

Bowie" IMHO this FarRiders Forum The other stand alone forum will (I think) attract any LD riders GTR & Others and it can become more LD orientated. I think if we spread the word, eg Westride #7 tomorrow there will be a drift to the new forum which will grow. So, my 2 bobs worth. Bowie PS: "Its Out Of Contol" Just had another look, 3 members today. Davo, it say's we all joined yesterday "arvo" (is it hosted in the US?)

As far as the original query to this thread is concerned, I think it probably IS time to break away to a separate forum. In the early days of FarRiders, it
seems that most riders were GTR-AUS members or at least friends or aquaintances of GTR-AUS members. This is no longer the case as the "FarRide"
concept has spread far & wide. BUT it would obviously involve extra costs. A gold coin donation system would probably help but how many would contribute?
This board also has a donation link on the first page and while there certainly have been some that have generously donated, most of the financial input still
comes from Dave. As a GTR-AUS member, I am happy either way but I can understand that some may prefer it as a standalone forum.
As for litigation etc, whether it stays as is on this forum or moves to it's own forum, the issue still remains the same. I'm no legal expert at all, but the way I see it, Dave may be in control of the forum (by being the registered owner), but I fail to see how he could be in control of anyone's actions resulting in what could be posted on the forum. The only thing I could suggest that perhaps a paragraph should be added somewhere to the effect that "if you do not feel confident about your ability to attempt a FarRide, then don't attempt to do it" (or is there already something there to that effect and I missed it?). The analogy to me is like suing your church minister because you have an accident on the way to church - after all, he has invited you there hasn't he?? I guess we'll never really know until an issue arises - until then, it's just a road - see where it takes you!!

I like the way the two forums are at the moment but as I said to Davo at Busselton, this monster is growing fast. I can see that separating the two forums is
going to have to happen as more and more members join, hell we even have 3 quatermasters now.(LOL)
I like Clink and Bowie have signed up on the new one and I don't think I'll be the last. There is a section in this site that you can already click on to make a donation and a few of us already have done this to try and share some of the cost to Davo. I think if we were to go down the path of being a registered club it would be a mistake, to many rules and regs can quickly destroy the feeling of what is there. There's my 5 cents worth. While we are discussion $$$'s and such and I make this comment not to gain pity or any such crap but to make those unaware of this up to speed.
The FarRider logo and associated wording is Australian Trademarked by me, or my company to be exact. That's a $1,000 investment. I say this so that each one of us can be on the guard for anyone misusing OUR name without permission. We should guard this name as its something each and everyone of you did some serious klms to gain entry into. There is a group over this side of the land who have a Iron Butt patch on their clothing for having done ................. wait for it. A 600klm days ride !!! The IBA are aware of this but have taken no action at the moment. I/we do not want anyone taking what we have lightly. I will fight it legally if needed. |

Actually, that's not as silly as it sounds. A few years ago I was contemplating starting something along FarRiders lines, and had picked 1000, 1500 and
2000 kilometre rides (in one day) as the 'milestones'. I was not really aware of the IBA, but knew it was USA-based, so deliberately steered clear of
any 'Iron Butt' references. Maybe they had heard of it, but didn't look too hard at it. I picked 'Long Distance Tourers' as the title for
the group I was going to start (one of many variations considered), but never went ahead with it. Had a patch designed and all that stuff, but couldn't
find the time to make it work (Is this sounding familiar Davo?). The name is very similar to the 'other' group in the USA, but I don't think they
stole my ideas!
Anyway - I agree with all that 600 klms is a dismal effort. I do 600 and 700 kilometre return trips to Sydney to join up for 300 or 400 kilometre rides with my Sydney mates! They call me crazy, but I enjoy my lunch with the boys, and enjoy the ride up and back a lot more than the crappy ride around Sydney environs. |
