Your mate Wayne registered tonight also.
Be a good sized crew there. I know you are only joking but I think I have said this to many FarRiders. I don't do FarRides for myself, although the extra rides are good for my training. I do them to see the huge smiles on all your faces and the excitement that comes from riders finding out they CAN do these longer rides. I do them because there was obviously a need, the number of riders that have done and are doing these rides plus the huge number now that know about FarRiders is clear that someone had to do this. A good online mate in the US paid me the highest compliment when he said "Dave you are the Mike Kneebone of Australia" Mike Kneebone is the main man of the Iron Butt Association. Now I do not agree at all however he went on to say with things like this "someone has to have the vision and get it started" But you all make it happen, I honestly get teary eyed when I think of you all doing these rides because I gave you a destination and reason. Damn I am a lucky bloke. |

I have a very dry sense of humor Davo and you will find that out as we meet each other more.
But Farriders would now seem to be a snow ball and we all thank you for starting it and keeping the flame alight. Good to hear Wayne has put his hand up for this one. I have been out of the saddle for over 5 weeks now as I have been restoring a boat. Only been out for a few short runs. Hope that it doesn't hinder me on the farride. But as you say its just a road. Cheers mate

Changes I have made to my prep and gear:
Because of the economy and the aud/usd rates I have had to make some compromises. Lights: I had been going to get some PHID's but at $600 usd these are now out. I had done research on HID upgrades to the stock lights but have gone against that mainly because of what would happen should these fail. Stock lights are easy to replace a globe. I am now looking at doing a HID conversion to my Hella FF50's which on all accounts seems to be the best thing with good improvements. Seat: Russell Day Long was the plan, John Moorehouse Ergo Seats seems to be the way it will go. GPS: Wanted a Zumo 550 but with questions put to those in the rally I am going with a refurb Garmin 2730 at $176 usd with everything that Garmin packaged as new. These units never came to Australia but are a great unit and cheap as considering they were over 1100$ new 2 yrs ago. They are refurb by Garmin, from all reports impossible to tell the difference from a new one. I will then buy updated Australian maps as I had been going to anyway. The plan was always to get a Zumo 550 from the US with US maps then add Aust maps as it was still cheaper. These units still have a 12mth warranty. |

I have bought LEDs off these guys and they seem to be decent. You could investigate them for your HID upgrade.

Garmin 2730 has been purchased by a US mate and fellow rally rider and will be forwarded onto me.
I have also arranged for my aux tank bag to be made by Linda of http://www.customtankbags.com/ |

Some nice looking tank bags there....good to see the set up getting close to finished Davo.
I was looking at the Aussie Motolight distributor at the Melb Expo this weekend (their stand was opposite ours) and they were doing packages for $477/set to suit what an individual wanted. How does that compare?

I think Motolight do a number of types, do they do a HID ? Phillips HID known as PHID have the best following in the LD area and best I could get is $599 USD a
pair.
edited: yeah they are only Halogen http://www.redmotorbike.com.au/products.html#fender

Yeah, just halogen. I was thinking of going down a similar route, with a HID conversion to the standard housing....

I hope you have better luck with your lights than I'm having Davo. Had a rock through the headlight two weekends back, plus snapped one of the new Narva
Compac 100 driving light brackets. Ordered a new BMW headlight lens (two piece light) and the package got lost in Canberra. Turned up a few days later. That
was the good news.
The bad news - The headlight lens was in several bits inside the padded bag! Had a new one express ordered that arrived ok. Autobarn replaced the snapped Compac 100 bracket with one from a new set of lights. Great, but the other side bracket snapped in the same place last weekend. They have replaced it as well, but are contacting Narva to see if they will allow a swap to a different set of lights. I am determined to get some auxiliary lights on this bike if it kills me! I also have a headlight guard fitted now, but this is the first light I've smashed in a few hundred thousand kilometres. To top it off, I also had a stone chip the lens of one of the driving lights last weekend (other side to the broken bracket). Cheers, and good luck getting the gear sorted for your bike. Mick B.
