Went into the Kawa dealer last week to price an RJay top box and ask about installation on an A1. They suggested going straight onto the existing rack and only
using the back two bolts to hold it on???? Can't see how that would not twist off with a bit of pressure. Can the base plate above be successfully made out
of a plastic cutting board?

You could make it out of a cutting board easily enough, but you would have to drill and bolt the top box itself to the cutting board, making it not easily
removable, say for taking into a motel room etc. at the front of the base plate there are two dome lugs that hold the front of the top box down and than there
is the latch piece at the back with clip the back of the topbox in place. the back piece looks somthing like the folowing piccy. you could make it out of piece
of tin/sheetmetal and somhow screw it to the cuting board and use a couple of tank bolts or cup head bolts at the front for the top box to clip into.
otherwise drill, and bolt the top box to the cutting board and smear the bolts on the inside of the topbox with silicone to seal it stopping water and stuff seaping into the box.

This is the rack I made for my top box.
Shook hell out of the bike, but rack and Top Box didn't move. And yes it was overloaded. .David Adelaide. GTR 1000 ---"POSH Bike"

Thanks for the tips Mr Mossberg and David. With your brackets David, it looks like the rear mounting holes are where the (helmet?) locks used to be. I
can't quite see how the forward mount connects to the body. Have you put in a piece of bracing that connects to the body under the antlers? Does the
forward mount line up with any existing holes? It certainly looks nice and sturdy.

Just to give you a few more ideas, this is the bracket I made. Bracket has been angled so that it lifts the box at the back a bit so that the box stays on a
parallel plane with the bike. Has been on the bike for years now and done many 1000's of k's.
As for the Kawa dealer suggesting that using only the back boltholes would be OK, don't believe it for a second!!

Glad Rob posted his because after a few welding jobs on my original base plate that comes with the RJays box I also have one of Roba's on mine and not a
worry now.
You may notice the bolt and pin in the underside second shot. I did this on my first and on the Roba one. I fitted the RJays box and drilled a hole from the inside of the box right down through the base plate and mounting bracket. This bugger is NOT falling off and just means a pin pulled and bolt removed extra to take the box off. |

This is mine made from 20mm stainless steel electrical conduit and a bag rack mount I like it because my tent and frying pan fit under it on the rack if you wish I can get some more photos It is very strong and dosen't move also it allows the box to be a bit further foward so the pillion can lean on it all the time with out having to lean back and lets you still get the seat off

Hi Woz, Yes you are right, the rear mounting holes where the helmet locks used to be. I tapped for a larger bolt, and then a lock nut onto that. The helmet lock bracket is about 10 mm thick and looks very strong. The forward mount is attached to a welded up "T" piece mounted under the antler mounting bracket, Then the angled bracket was bolted to the 5mm aluminium plate under pressure. So it pushes up, and forward, to take the weight. The white spacers, under the 5mm aluminium plate, were cut on an angle from galv. water pipe. Making the Top Box sort of level and lower on the back bike frame Hope this helps. .
I plan on later fitting my tow bar somewere, between those two bolts. . David Adelaide. GTR 1000 ---"POSH Bike" |

Thanks David, all that was hidden is now revealed.
Patrick, you lead a man unto temptation! I want bar risers, a top box and new screen, and here you are selling a bike with 60K less on the clock than mine, so I wonder what I could get for the A1 and wouldn't it be fun to ride back from Oberon???? But would riding a black one cause me to start thinking like Sebastian Bear with fetishes for red leather dipped in chocolate (revealed on my welcome thread)?? Might be safer to stay with the more classically inspiring A1. |
