Someone told me this last summer as I couldn't remember whether to wind the clocks forward or back at the start of daylight saving.
Adjust clocks - Spring forward, Fall back. (remembering that Fall is autumn in the good old US of A)
Cheers, Craig

Daylight saving clock winding mnemonic |

Davo's note regarding WA daylight saving not starting until the end of October, and the fact that SA started a week ago reminded me of a good mnemonic.

Hey Paddington. That IS a good one isn't it. Mr Tosh lived in the US for four years in the late 70's and he taught me that one. I've always had
the trouble remembering forward or back at the beginning and end of daylight savings. Had trouble with the different time zones going over and coming back
across Oz I might add. Not when we got to the other end or when we've come home, but all the bits in the middle?? I think it was the two separate changes
after leaving NSW or was that three? Nearly got us into a spot of bother approaching Madura on the way back!

Bloody Queenslanders! You don't know what you're missing out on! Like losing an hours sleep!!!! The evenings are the best for BBQ's and you
"seem" to be able to get loads more done with the extra daylight. I've lived with it all my life and it's something to both look forward to
and not due the lack of sleep! It's amazing how 1 hour can make such a difference, but hey. Winters are long and cold in Canberra.

No such thing as daylight saving, moving clocks around is just organised stupidity getting up in the dark to go to bed in the daylight, saving bloody what,
has a group of humans ever done any thing more dumb

Curtins! Phewy! Ha ha! I suppose your furniture does too. Ha ha.
Now Patrick. Yes. We aren't actually SAVING daylight, but we do get to enjoy the afternoons and evening twilight without the Sun setting at 4.30pm. Going to bed in the daylight? What time are you going to bed??? We aren't the only country in the world that does daylight savings you know. In England in Summer it can still be light at 10pm at night! Now there's some extra savings for you! Then again in Winter the Sun is already setting at 3pm and dark around 4pm or earlier. Icky!!! We have incredible light here. Even in Winter. The Sun sets very quickly on the Nullabor though. Like sinking into the inky blackness of nothingness. |

The further you go in latitude for more benefit you get, explains why us QLDers aren't excited but it is a good thing in Melbournistan.
What I've never been able to figure out is why they don't try it in Winter? Getting up and coming home in the dark can get pretty depressing in a Victorian winter and DLS might get you a bit of daylight in the arvo?

I've lived in a state thas has it (SA) and now live in a state that doesn't. (QLD). I can go either way on the issue.
However, there are lots of people migrating from states that have daylight saving to a state that doesn't. It's just juggling a clock to suit the earths rotation around the sun. And getting better curtain mileage too. 8).

Daylight saving has not really affected me for the last six years. I go to work before sunrise and leave after sunset all season long. But the family enjoys it
till they go to school.

More on the Spring forward. Fall back. I was reading about it in Readers Digest today. Funny how things jump out at you. This last Winter in Canberra I was
getting up and driving to work in the dark, but because I finish work at around 3.30pm I was able to enjoy more daylight. Nice in a Canberra Winter. We still
have much more daylight during Winter than Europe does and we have days where it's SO frosty and -5 or so in the mornings, but the days are so clear.
Crystal days we call them here. Perfectly gorgeous. After a hot Summer the first breath of Autumn and Winter is a relief and the air becomes so fresh.

You don't like conformity much do you Patrick. Statement not a question. Not a bad thing really, just makes life more difficult sometimes. Hey! You
could always move to Queensland? You could also lobby parliament to instigate a referendum to vote daylight savings out altogether. Let the people decide
perhaps. I'm pretty sure the people voted it in in the first place? There's always the right of reply in parliament too. Doesn't get used much,
but it's there. The only time I didn't appreciate daylight savings was when I was a child on Christmas Eve! That was hard!!!

Mrs Tosh when I was small I always wished I was somebody else then when I was about six I decided that I was me and that was it and the rest of you would just
have to get use to it, when I was truck driving I always ran on Queensland time where ever I was, but my job now involves working with others and mine pre
starts and a few hours farming when I get home ect ect ect and 4am get out of beds [really 3am] so I just do what I have to do and get on with it but calling
3am 4am is still dumb

Well Patrick. You're very lucky that you decided that at six years old. I use to wish I was someone else and somewhere else too. Anyways. It took me many years to be comfortable with who I am and to like myself for who I am. One programmer said to me when I left Telstra that if people don't like me (in new employment) then Fxxx 'em... GTR-AUS is a wonderful thing is it not. |

when your working 12 hr shifts 40+ degrees, having daylight savings doesn't change a thing, at the end of yoru shift, your still feeling the same as you
were when no daylight savings, the alst thing you want to do when you get home is go out and mow the lawn or somthing cos there is still daylight left in the
day etc. As Rusjel has noted, it may work well down south, but up here, it's just a pain in the rear end. there is still talk of having t up here, the push
is coming from the southeast, gold coast area etc.
It was voted out in qld, but with the constant talk from the big smoke of bringing it back it will be very interesting if they do. the south east may be happy and change the clock, but up here, i think the people up here will tell the gubbermint and those in the big smoke to go moot the boot and not touch the clock....

In my day...when I was younger..much younger, it was good to finish work at 4pm and still have daylight for 18 holes of golf.
Now with a seven year old...try putting them to bed at 7:30pm.....IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. It doesn't work....It doesn't get my vote. Cheers! Rick. QLD |

Daylight savings doesn't change how you feel at the end of a long working day; and it doesn't make it easier to put your children to bed. It is just a
part of life.

Well in the Adelaide Hills I love it. I get up in the dark anyway (5 to 5.30am) and after a long day at Uni, there is nothing better than having the beautiful
Adelaide Hills Spring sunlight in the afternoon to play with the kids, mow lawns, work on cars/bikes, sit and have a beer, shoot the shit with friends.
As it gets warmer we tend to spend more time out of the house in the back garden and under the pergola than inside. When it comes to bed-time. Our two hit the sack at 7.30 - 8.00pm and blockout curtains work wonders. Not a problem. Cheers, Craig
